“Dacian cup”
Title
“Dacian cup” |
Description
The cup has a tronconic shape with straight walls, wide mouth and narrow bottom. The handle is rectangular in section and it is attached under the rim and above the base. The decorative elements consist of oblique lines which are carved at the bottom. Most specialists consider this cup to have been used as a lamp, as it has traces of secondary firing on the inside. It is possible for some items to have been used as well in rituals, as some Dacian archaeological contexts indicate. This type of pot is found more rarely in the area of the Dacian fortresses from the Orăştie Mountains, in opposition to the high occurrence in other Dacian settlements. Discovery place: Costeşti – Cetăţuie (Hunedoara County) Dimensions: H: 6,5 cm; rim D: 13,5 cm; base D: 5,1 cm. Material: clay, course yellowish-red paste, containing sand Technique: handmade, oxidation firing |
